The HumCo PBA
We are a group of private landowners and community members working to safely use prescribed fire. In California, fire was a natural part of the pre-settlement ecosystem. There are many benefits that can be derived from appropriately using prescribed fire: improving forage for livestock, managing fuel loads, reducing potential impacts of wildfires to communities, restoring ecological processes interrupted by fire exclusion, and more.
We believe fire is a safe and effective tool to restore ecosystems, build community, and empower people to become more conscious stewards of their local environments.
The Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association formed and conducted its first burns in 2017, and was the first PBA formed in the western United States. It is supported through membership dues, grants, and the volunteer efforts of the members.
What is a Prescribed Burn Association?
Prescribed Burn Associations (PBAs) are at their core community based organizations that provide mutual aid support to private land owners and the community by bringing fire back to the landscape.

How can you get involved?
Some of our PBA members, board and staff do have previous fire experience, but that is not a prerequisite for getting involved putting good fire on the ground. No previous experience is required to join us in the field. Sign up for a membership to start working with our growing community!
Who is involved in our work?
Individuals and groups here in Humboldt County! Community members including: students, landowners, volunteer fire departments, working professionals, artists, and more!
